Update on Abby and Pictures

Update on Abby:

Abby was diagnosed with Leukemia on July 11th. Monday, the 14th, she had all the bone marrow and spinal fluid examinations.

She has “A.L.L.”, which is the more treatable kind of Leukemia with an 80% cure average. She has a “high risk” version of ALL though, and has to be treated more aggressively because her white blood cells were DOUBLING every day… that is an unusual high risk development that shows the Leukemia to be extremely aggressive.

She’ll receive a lot of chemo and medication for the next month, in and out of the hospital weekly.

After the first month, the doctors will re-evaluate how she is responding and lay out a long term plan for her, but it will likely be six months with lots of treatment, and then 2-3 years of monthly treatment.

Of the 20% of children that are not cured, they relapse in the first three years and have less than a 5% recovery rate from a relapse.

We ask your prayers for:

  • Abby's healing
  • For the nausea and vomiting to subside
  • Rest; we’re only getting a handful of hours a night, and we’re very tired
  • Clarity in making decisions about her treatment, juggling high risk
    considerations
  • Wisdom to deal with the changes in our life, financial matters and arrangements
  • Strength enough to not let our other children slip through the cracks of our attention and parenting
  • Opportunities to minister to all those around us.

We covet your prayers and thank you for them in advance.

    Brent & Michelle Riggs

This is Abby before her first chemo Abby rested well after the treatments, but was so tired.

Abby has a crush on a wonderful boy whose family is friends of ours. Abby loves him so much and tells EVERYONE about him. He made her day when he visited her in the hospital. He is an incredible kid.

Thanks again for praying for Abby and our family, and for asking others to pray. Knowing that others are praying for our precious daughter means more to us than we can express. Thank you also for all of your comments and emails. They are read and reread especially during those quiet times when my daughter is asleep.

praying... i hate thinking of anyone heading into such a long intense battle... do your best to go one day, hour, minute at a time. So much easier said than done and sounds so cliche. (sometimes I hate it when people say that to me, makes me want to smak them) but it doesn't change the truth of it! I pray that God fills you with the grace to endure and find joy in each day that comes.

Blessings,

Pam

My heart is breaking for you and dear Abby! We are praying for Abby and your family; I will enlist some of our prayer warriors as well. We all know how good God is and He will be using this trail to reveal His grace, mercy, and love through your family and precious Abby to others. He has chosen Abby and your family to help Him reveal Himself and you will be rewarded, beacuase that's what God does!! Much love to you; I wish I could give you a big hug. I hope you feel my prayers in your heart!

Michelle - I am on the adoption skin/hair group on Yahoo and saw your post about Abby there. Even though I don't know you or your family, God has been calling me to pray for Abby at all strange hours of the night. Our own daughter has some serious health problems and I know how much the prayers of loved ones and strangers alike have lifted her and us up during many hospital stays. Take care of yourselves and may God give you comfort and hope.

Michelle - We are sad to be so far away while you're walking through this chapter with Abby. We are praying for you and your sweet family. We wish we could be closer to help with any of the day to day stuff you might need - but know that we are praying! I think about you guys several times every day and offer up a small prayer every time. We are praying for endurance for you and Brent and for miraculous healing for sweet Abby. Hugs and love from Nevada! Love, Fran & Dave

Michelle,
Please know we will be praying for Abby and ya'll. Your friendship has already had an impact on me in such a short time. My mom had chemo for a year and beat it! I know it seems overwhelming and with a child I can't imagine but God is faithful to comfort you.

Dear Riggs Family,
Reading Abby's story makes me very thankful - for our daughter Casey was diagnosed with ALL when she was 3. That has been over 7 years ago and she's a beautiful, very active 10 year old. The Lord was gracious to us during it all and since...I wish I had time to tell our story, but I just wanted to say that I understand some of what you are going through and I will pray for the Lord's guidance and loving presence to infold you in His grace always. Casey would love to send something to Abby...is that allowed? :) I love Abby's smile. I think I shall go hug my little Casey now.
