Update on the Riggs Family

To all,

This would feel like a classic I Love Lucy episode if it weren’t so tiring and difficult. It seems to just be a circus of events.

Abby is still in the hospital with a high fever, and really feeling pretty bad. She is very achy, has “mystery” pains all over that are no doubt effects of the chemo. And her beautiful black hair gathers in small piles on the floor each day. That she still has quite a bit left, is a testament to how much she started with.

Sami had to go to the doctor again this morning with another infection on her opposite arm. That’s five infection sites for her in about three weeks. She’ll have to go back to the doctor Monday. She continues to have to be isolated from Abby, and semi-isolated from the rest of the family. (Sami is not contagious/infectious accept by open wound to open wound contact…)

Because of Sami’s infection, we have to wash all the sheets every day, wash all laundry after one use, no matter how slight; use a special cleanser in the shower every day (that can be quite itchy to the nether regions), disinfectant the whole house continually, and put some goop up everyone’s nose twice a day. Sami continues on three times a day antibiotics.

Michelle is sick and feverish, but has to stay with Abby. She can actually get more rest there, than if she was at home dealing with everything there. So, I’m at home, and she is there. Today, she has had some sort of allergic reaction causing her to break out in swollen hives from head to toe. I just spoke to her on the phone, and the swelling hives are getting noticeably worse. Her mother is coming over to watch Abby while Michelle goes to the emergency room.

UPDATE ON MICHELLE:
Michelle went to the emergency room. They think she had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic course of Bactrim she finished last week.

The swelling was head to toe, down her throat, and in her lungs. She had spider-web-like red hives all over her entire body. It was pretty scary looking.

They have her on steroids and antihistamines, and an inhaler…. She is back at the hospital with Abby.

Thanks for your prayers and concern. Looks like we are going to have Landis go to my parents house next week, and Sami is going to Michelle’s Mom’s house. Abby will be at the hospital most of the week, and I will be home washing/disinfecting everything in sight.

We are going to try and separate everyone for a week and get all these various ills knocked out.

I think we are just picking up bugs/germs at the hospital since we have to be there so much. Abby will be in the hospital AT LEAST until Monday, and she has four scheduled days at the hospital next week for chemo.

I hope that doesn’t come across as whining. Lots of people ask for updates, so those are the facts.

It is all a bit difficult and stressful, but we find strength every day as we depend on God. Thank you for your continued prayers, and many, many thanks to all the dear friends who have been bringing a meal to our house each and every evening. That has been a TREMENDOUS practical blessing.

Oh Brent,

Please send Michelle my best and tell her I'm praying for her too!

I'm sorry that it is raining so many trials at once. This is the kind of rain that feels like flood waters rising!

Praying for more hands and feet to keep you above water until the storm settles down.

Praying that God multiply your strength and lift up your weary hands by His Spirit and grace!

Praying that the God of mercy and love comforts you tonight as you rest in Him!

Praying that Sami is better and will not infect Abby once she is able to come home.

I am reading through two books - With Christ in the School of Prayer and The Holiest of All by Andrew Murray. Both have opened my eyes to how little we can do and how desperately dependant on Him we need to be for everything. Your situation is a reality of that very calling and He counts you worthy to share it all with us. The good, bad and the ugly.

Praising Him for your strength to share all of what He has brought before you!

IN HIS amazing grace,
Jill

I am thankful for the update. I am praying for you. Don't worry about sounding like you are whining. YOU DON'T, and even if you did, you have permission to whine a little... life is hard. Hang in there. HIS GRACE IS SUFFICENT... I know.

Whining? Oh my word, do't go there.
I knew something was wrong when I didn't hear back from Michelle :( I continue to pray for all of you. You were the last thought on my mind last night and the first thought when I got up. I only wish I was there to help.

Brent and Michelle,

I am so sorry...it is stressful enough without all the extra illnesses. I think that separating for a week is a good idea. It will be a hard week but everyone will get healthy and then together again! Michelle, I am praying that your allergic reaction will heal quickly. Love and hugs, Sunday

Oh My goodness, your family is amazing and going through things that most of us can't imagine! You are definitely not whining, but being real so that we can pray for you in exactly the way you need it! Thank you for sharing. "God, I lift this family up to you right now and ask for your divine healing power upon each and every one of them. I pray for not only healing, but your peace that passes our understanding. You are a good God, we know that and ask these things in your son Jesus' name. Amen." I will continue to pray for you all!

Whining?? Are you kidding? You both seem to be handling all that is going on in your life with a grace not many could manage. I will pray that everyone feels better soon.

Thanks so much for the update. You do not at ALL sound like you're whining. We all appreciate knowing what's going on because of our concern for all of you. You are all in our thoughts and prayers continuously. Hopefully a week apart will take care of all the various illnesses. Hope Abby's side effects subside soon.

Praying and praising God for continued strength and healing for you all. I am asking God to tell satan to sit down, shut up and get his hands of "MY CHILDREN."
Whining? I don't think so. We all need to hear what's going on in your lives to be inspired by your faith and grace and to know how to pray. God didn't keep Job's story out of the Bible, did He?

Michelle and Brent,
You don't need my sympathy, that won't do you any good, so I will just give you my prayers.
I can't pretend to understand what a toll this trial is taking on you. Even though you know God is in control and if He is allowing this, then somehow, some way....He is working for good....that doesn't mean it isn't painful and exhausting. I pray that He will continue to minister to your hearts and allow you to feel His loving presence and I pray that He will continue to motivate other believers to pray and act in ways that will bless your family.
Remember His promises.
love,
Holly

Brent, If sharing our burdens and trials were considered whining, then the Apostle Paul would have called himself the chief whiner!

I had always wondered how Peter could be chained between guards, scheduled to die at sunrise and still whistle hymns. But,

By sharing his trials and burdens he showed us his faith. Even during the worst times of his life and it bought encouragement to us just like you have to this day.

In Christ,
R.C. Fallis

Faith reminds me that Christ has walked this road before me.

Oh my. I feel so sorry for you all going through all this at one time.
Believe me you are not whining and even if you were that would be okay too.
I am praying each day for the whole family. You truly need a period of rest and peace.
