Continuing to keep Abby & your family in our prayers!
Hi, I have been gone for a few days but was just reading over all of the posts I had missed and wanted to comment on the "friend with a teenage son".
We have 5 kids. 1 boy and 4 girls. Our middle daughter is grown now but has that same attitude. She is always negative and constantly, even now, talks of being mistreated. If anything we have always tried harder with her because she is the middle child and we knew she had that personality. I am not saying they have the exact problem but I am sure similar. I don't have great advice as she still does this sometimes at 21. She has learned that we don't respond to it so it has eased up some. For several years I just went along with it, allowing her to lie because I did not want to call her out in front of others. She is just always wanting people to think she is picked on and the stories just grow like crazy. But, long story longer...in time I learned that I was a big part of the problem. I was allowing her to act like that. I was going along with it or even calling her out on things and that would make her think she was mistreated even more. I really believe that kids act the way we teach them to act. She figured out that acting like this is what got her attention, negative or positive it didn't matter. I am not just talking about attention from us. We have 2 of our daughters that demand attention and therefore they always got the most attention. She learned that by "lying" or exagerating people gave her the attention instead of her sisters.
My advice would be to maybe look a little deeper. There is a reason he is doing that. As a parent I think it is our responsibilitly to figure out the whys and try to fix it, even if they don't have any knowledge of it.
With our daughter I just stopped responding to it. If she would come home and say "the teachers at school hate me, one of them threatened to push me" yes, actual story. The old me would respond, "I am calling the school and getting that teacher fired" even though I knew it was a lie. The new and improved me started responding, "hmmm, that just doesn't sound right, how was lunch today?" I just changed subjects! She knew I didn't want to hear it. Eventually she got the hint. I could be totally off on this but that is just my theory. Each of children are so different and each has their own weaknesses and strengths as I am sure your children do.
One more thing I did, to help all of our kids is I sat down one night and wrote out a letter for each of them. The letters were each titled "Reasons I am so proud of you" I tried to make each one very different so none were the same. I really had to think hard on some of them at the time but I would even write things like, I love the way animals love you instantly, they know you have a caring heart and they just know they can trust you. Or, I am so proud of how you can carry on a conversation with adults, that is a quality that is unique to you. It does not always come naturally to your siblings.
Sorry to have gone on and on. I really thought this would be short but oops! My husband is right...I talk too much!
Thank you for always sharing with us. Your journey and your walk with God are truely inspiring.
OH no! WHO cut the cheese?
Spidely Landis like father like son, Puffy Cheeks, Puffy Cheeks, keep on Puffing the Cheeks.!!!!
I won't make fun of you, because this alone proves just how great of a father you are.
I'm sorry that Abby is getting weaker, but at least her throwing up is decreasing. I'll keep praying for Abby, you, and your family.
