For those of you who have never dealt with ice, it's not like anything else. The whole world comes to a screeching halt. In snow, you can get traction. Not ice. The roads will be abandoned after the sun goes down, and probably all day tomorrow.
Ice accumulates on trees and power lines causing them to snap and break. It gets in the fans of your heat pump and compressor and freezes them up. Doors and lids are welded shut.
It is paralyzing but incredibly beautiful. It's too late to get any shots of today's storm, but here are some from out last one:

Told ya... beautiful, amazing, wondrous. But don't let it fool you. Ice storms are dangerous and thankfully, don't happen very often. Here in Oklahoma, we are in just the right place for them... much farther north, and it's usually snow; farther south, rain.
Update on Abby
Before the ice started to stick, Abby made it to a local clinic to get her blood work done. By the time Michelle got half way to Children's hospital (about 40 miles), they had decided to close the clinic/doctor's-office where she was headed and they had to do a Louie back to Norman.
She ended up going to a minor emergency center in Norman to get Abby's blood drawn. They determined she needs a transfusion but there's no way to get her to the hospital until tomorrow at the earliest, if the ice melts.
Michelle's mother lives a couple miles from the minor emergency they ended up at, so she and the kids inched their way over there to spend the night tonight.
Abby needs to get blood soon. She is in metabolic acidosis, which means her body acid is TOO LOW. That, the chemo, and her spinal fluid pressure (probably rising again) are most likely conspiring to keep her throwing up every 10-15 minutes.
We would appreciate your prayers for Abby's health, for the ice to melt quickly tomorrow, and for safe travel in the nasty weather.
Enjoy the "ice" pictures. It is truly magnificent - the kind of wonders God designed (not "evolution") for us to both enjoy, and to stand in respectful awe of.
Tomorrow is "Laughter Lives Tuesday". Our theme this week is "Funny, Cute & Endearing Ways We Say I Love You". I hope you're going to participate... it's been REALLY fun!

Praying for Abby to get the transfusion soon!
When my son was so sick he had life threatening anemia and had to get a transfusion and it helped him so much.
Stay safe and warm! Prayers and thoughts for Abby!
praying for Abby and yes while ice storms are beautiful they are trecherous!!
Awww...poor Abby. I hope she can get the blood transfusion soon and it helps her feel better.
I emailed you at your brentriggs.com address about a suggestion from a friend who had a child with leukemia a few years ago.
I love your ice storm pictures. We had one here right before Christmass and i had to get Anna to the hospital. We had to use friends car with 4WD and made it there very slowly.
We said our prayers for you all at dinner tonite!!!
Ice storms are beautiful when you don't have to be out in them... We don't get too many of them here thankfully either!!! They sure do make for GREAT pix... one of my favorite things to photograph!!!
Prayers that Abby gets what she needs tomorrow as well & safe travel!!!
Even though it is so beautiful, I am not a fan of ice........people here in Texas (myself included) don't know how to deal with it well, much less drive. Glad Michelle and the kids are ok. And that the sun shines tomorrow and Abby can get to the hospital. Love to all as well as prayers.

Thanks for the update. Definitely still praying for Abby and for the weather to clear up around here.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family! Abby is a very amazing little girl, and she is very lucky to have such wonderful parents.
God had an amazing plan when he put your family together.
Hugs and prayers

I've been thinking about Abby and you all all day now. Will continue to pray for her strength and for God's comfort.
I was actually going to comment on a previous post you had about a crazy day that was so bad you just had to laugh. At the time I read it I didn't think I actually had a story that I could relate to...until this weekend when 4 out of the 5 of us in our family got the stomach bug. It wasn't pretty - as you know all too well. But, it was seriously laughable how quickly we all came down with it. In a way that only God can work, it also served to keep me on a constant prayer vigil for Abby. Everytime one of my children or I got sick, I remembered Abby and what she's going through and lifted her up in prayer.
I don't have any words at all to comfort you, but I hope it helps a bit knowing a sister in Christ is praying for Abby and praying for you and trusting that God knows what he's doing.
Bless you all.
I am SO Very Sorry to read this of dear Abby :( She is immediately in prayers lifted High to Our Lord Savior! I pray Abby gets the needed blood ASAP & the needed enough bicarbonate so the plasma acidity decreases BEFORE coma or death occur... She's in the Loving Hands of Jesus at this very time.
Please Father in Heaven give this precious child of yours more time with her family! Thank You :)
May your Hearts be lifted on High!

I will pray for Abby, I'm so sorry to hear all that is going on in your family. When it rains it pours doesn't it. Beautiful ice, but I know how bad it can get. We are in a ice storm warning where I live right now.
So that is the stuff you are sending our way? I've been thru servel ice storms, The photos are lovely and I love to see what God does on the trees, I just don't like the results of what happens when the trees break and all the accidents the slick roads cause.
Power outages, cold weather with no heat, all results from ice storms.
I love to see God's wonders, but sure hate to be out in it and slip and slid all over the roads.
Praying for safe travel getting Abby to the place she needs to be to get where she needs to be.
Praying for the whole family as you are dealing with lots, and lots on your plates right now.
Hugs to all.
When it rains it pours. But I have faith and a good feeling that the doctors will help. The only reason I mentioned earlier that nothing helped my nausea for 5 months (and it wasn't cancer) - was to let you know that was possible. You were right there calling the doctors. God has given them good skill and I pray for every available effort now to help Abby, and that the nausea itself gets better and the continuous watch brings blessings, and safety. Love, L in SD
Ice - it's such a beautiful little pain in the rear, huh?
As I type, I'm waiting for the deafening silence of the power outtage that is likely to occur sometime tonight. We're having the same storm here in NW Arkansas, and the local newspeople are nearly giddy with the excitement of it all. "Freezing rain! Snapping trees! Black ice!" Oh, boy!
We're praying lots for Abby -- for healing, for comfort and peace during these particularly difficult moments of nausea and vomiting, and for answers that result in RELIEF for your sweet little girl. Praying for you and Michelle as well. I know you're overwhelmed and exhausted. Even fully leaning on God, I know you have to be physically just WIPED OUT.
You guys are amazing parents, I just have to tell you that. Thanks for doing such an AMAZING job keeping us updated, despite all you're going through as a family. It really helps in knowing specifically how to pray.
~Kristy
I was JUST coming to say that WE had an ice storm today as well!! And THEN I find out that YOU are in OKLAHOMA as well! That seriously blows my MIND! I don't know WHERE I assumed you lived, but probably somewhere far, far away! LOL
(this is sounding increasingly stalkerish...LOL)
We are NEIGHBORS! We are just north of Tulsa! How COOL is that??!
Oh and...uh...stay safe. Still praying for sweet Abby!
Can't they send an air ambulance for her?! Or find a Canadian paramedic? Driving in ice is not impossible.
Amazing pics. We continue to pray without ceasing, every day, for Abby! I sure don't miss those Southern Ice storms. It almost seems less treacherous up North?
Darlene and family
Somehow I missed this post until now. Beautiful photos! So sorry to hear that Abby is in Acidosis. I have Renal Tubular Acidosis and it causes the body to retain acid, leading to multiple health issues including the vomiting. I hope that the docs gave her IV fluids or electrolyte therapy (potassium, sodium bicarbonate, etc) while she was there, because that is something that she is definitely lacking. Now that we know this, I wonder if her doc will approve her taking sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) daily to try to correct the acidosis, thus relieving some of her vomiting spells? Might be worth asking the doc about. I hope she gets some relief soon.
Love all the pictures of the ice storm... I love when nature show's God's magnificence.
