Today was a long, tiring day for everyone, especially Abby. She handled it like a pro………well until the end.
Abby's bone marrow is still not producing the cells she needs. There were still no white blood cells and Abby needed a platelet and packed red cell transfusion. They may begin shots to stimulate her cell production in the morning, if there is no improvement. The shots are very painful and most adults hate them. I really don't want her to go through any more, but I also want her to get better.
The wound near Abby's g-tube looked worse today. It is the main reason they are considering giving Abby the shots. It is swollen twice as big as yesterday, angry red, with black areas. It is so swollen and necrosed. Stomach contents are leaking out of it onto her already sore skin. The stomach acid is further damaging her skin. A mixture of Maalox, A&D and bactroban is helping some, but it is still sore.
We consulted with a gastroenterologist today. He wants to do an ultrasound of her liver and several studies on her g-tube. He is also requesting a consult with a surgeon. He told us flat out that if her counts were up (white blood cells, platelets and red blood cells) he would recommend having the g-tube removed and replaced in a new spot. Please pray that the tests are ordered, preformed and that the results give a clear picture of what we need to do for Abby.
It is also time for her needle in her port to be removed and replaced. This is something she usually handles well, but it is coming at the end of a long day. As soon as her antibiotics are in, we will have to start that chore.
All discussions today were in front of Abby and she understood most of what was said. Not fun, but she handled it all like a pro. She handled everything UNTIL she heard they wanted to paint her tongue purple. Needles, talk of surgery and doctors pressing on her belly weren't even a bump in the road. Finding out they wanted to paint her tongue purple brought her to tears.
Abby has a yeast infection on her tongue. The medicine she is on isn't working and the other "normal" medicines are too hard on her liver. Her doctor wants to paint her tongue and inside of her mouth with a purple medicine that should destroy the infection, but will also leave her tongue and mouth purple for a few days.
Our beautiful bald princess has had to endure hair loss, tubes sticking out of her body and sores. She is noticing that some people are staring at her. She says, "that person is looking at me with a mean face." They are not mean, just curious and not so subtle. No wonder she wants to skip the purple tongue.
From Brent:
Want to have some fun and lift her spirits? Here is Abby and her purple tongue:

Abby shows off her new purple tongue that she is really
apprehensive about. She did not want to use the medicine.
WOULD YOU PAINT YOUR TONGUE?
We're hoping a bunch of friends and kids will "paint" their tongue/mouth, send us a photo with a short caption-message, and we will put up a post tomorrow with all the pics. Here's Brent leading the charge to show you what we hope you'll send us:

Hi Abby! I wanted to show you my beautiful blue-purple-violet tongue!
I love your purple tongue, it is SO pretty, that I wanted to
paint mine too! I love you! Your Dad - www.riggsfamilyblog.com
That's what we are looking for. It would be a LOT of fun. Here's some suggestions for coloring your tongue: suckers, popsicles, non-toxic markers, food coloring, etc. (I had an extra special trick up my sleeve... any guesses?)
Send us your pics/captions and we will put up a fun post tomorrow with all the pictures. Send them to: brent@brentriggs.com

PRAYING FOR YOU SWEETHEART. I LOVE THAT LITTLE PURPLE TONGUE...GETTING READY FOR EASTER BUNNY??? HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER REAL SOON, I LOVE YOU ABBY!!!!
I just got this...I'm on it!!! Don't have anything tonight but will go around the corner and borrow some food coloring from my stepmom tomorrow!
ME AGAIN! For those who are going to the store for something to paint the tongue...Tongue Splashers gum works great! I'm gonna look for that first...food coloring will be plan B! :)
My friend's babies both had thrush, and she had to use gensin-violet (no idea on the spelling there) on their mouths. I'm guessing you're using the same thing for Abby. They were just infants though and didn't care. It was one thing for her little girl to have a purple mouth, but she found it a bit odder to paint her son's mouth purple.
I don't have a picture, but maybe tell her that other kids have to have it too.... even kids who aren't super sick! That might make her feel better (though it won't make her laugh like her daddy's picture) :)
Praying for Abby, and for continued wisdom for the doctors and you guys (and strength for you too!!!!)
Not sure about the spelling but gention violet is what they used on her. I am not too sure what you used. The medicine they used on Abby usually works. I pray for Abby daily.
Feel better soon Abby.
Hi Brent and Abby,
I just wanted you to know i sent you an email with a "green" photo from my son!!! Keep your chin up Pretty Princess!
Have a blessed day!!!
Poor sweet Abby. She is dealing with so much, that no little girl should have to deal with. Oh how I wish I could just give her a big hug.
During my treatment I had the Neulasta shots to up the white count. It's not fun but it does work and fast.
Praying for you guys and hoping that your hospital stay is over soon.
Hey Abby, purple tongues are cool. When my son was a baby he had to have his tongue painted purple with this stuff called Gentian Violet. It worked great and was awesome looking. Is that what you're using?
I think you should write a book called, "Abby and Her Purple Tongue".
I don't have a tongue picture for you tonight, but we'll work on it tomorrow. Sweet purple tongue dreams! Praying for you!
So sorry to hear about Abby's day & yours!
Praying for an overnite miracle!!!She truely is amazing how strong she is.
I hope you received my last e-mail with the extra info for her.
Hannah would love to do a purple tongue but not sure how yet?
God Bless you all, & with all a painfree, peaceful night of rest & miraculous healing!
In Jesus Powerful name!

ha ha..photoshop?
our little one had the purple tongue too from thrush..we actually got to take a bottle home...we still like to use it on people when they fall asleep at our house.....lol lol lol
Ooh, Abby, I LOVE your purple tongue!!! Purple is my favorite color of all time. I think it looks great on anything, especially tongues!
I know the purple tongue. Thrush is not a fun thing to have. Not fun at all. I'm sorry your little girl is having to deal with that on top of everything else. I've been taking care of my sick kiddos for 3 weeks now and often think of your sweet girl while feeling sorry for myself. I can only imagine the weary days that you face and will continue to pray for all of you. Psalm 51:10
Hey Abby, I love your purple tongue so much that I made mine purple too! My daughter has braces so the dentist gave her these things to chew after she brushes her teeth to make sure she does a good job! I used one to make my tongue purple just like yours! I am emailing your dad a picture! Take care! I think the purple tongue is wayyy cool!!

Abby is getting a head start on dying Easter eggs by painting her tongue purple. I love it !!!
You are such a great dad. Abby is blessed to have you and Michelle to be with her through all of this. God never makes mistakes and He didn't when He gave Abby to you.
You all are still in my prayers and heart.

Poor Abby. How much does one kid have to suffer? I had been wondering why they don't take the tube out and move it somewhere else so the infection will clear up, glad to hear they are considering it because it seems ridiculous to leave it there gathering infection.
How cute the only thing that bothers her was the purple tongue! We have candy here called Kablooey that turns your tongue blue, kids love it. Maybe I can send her some and you can all eat it together and see that colored tongues are superfun!

Hi Brent! Check out this Blog:

Feb 12 entry- baby with a purple tongue! Probably the same medicine Abby took.
PS to that comment with the blog link- It's just another blog I read, so I don't have permission for you to post the picture, but you could still show Abby!
You've got mail! I also blogged my pictures just in case they didn't send correctly.

My goodness, Abby is sooooo sweet, I wish I could give her a huge hug! My kids will LOVE getting purple tongues tomorrow and then we'll send a picture---actually Gavin won't put anything purple in his mouth since he only drinks milk and eats cheerios everyday(!), so it will be my daughter and me : ). What a fun idea, you are such a thoughtful awesome dad Brent!
((((Hugs))))
I think you turned your tounge purple by using some photosho[ program on your computer...
PRAYING for sweet Abby girl. She is so strong. It amazes me.

Sorry, sitting this one out... if you read my blog you'll understand. But Abby's Beautiful no matter what color her mouth is! :) Thanks for keeping us all updated in Blogville! I so wish I was closer so Michelle could take a break!!! My prayers are lifted up to Our Lord Father the Healer!
I hate to beat a dead horse .... I've mentioned this before. Now I am almost even more certain.
I am sure you've already googled the mess out of it and probably been suggested before and .. well I'm probably telling you nothing you've not heard before, but just in case ...
I think that part of Abby's feeding tube problem is a yeast problem. Yeast can cause things to get red and angry.
Candida made my picc line red & angry. Once we fixed the yeast problem .. we fixed the picc line being red & angry problem.
I am continuing the prayers for Abby!!
It looks like you ate a violet flower .. or maybe 100 of them.
I'm not sure what you used to get that purple tongue, but I can only hope it's lots of purple icing on a yummy cake. :)
I don't LOVE lots of icing .. nope, Not Me!
Oh Abby...I love your purple tongue!!! I think you're the coolest little girl ever!!! I'm going to get my kids to do it today too and we'll show you tomorrow..so cool!
I'm sorry to hear that Abby had a hard day today! I have my nephew tomorrow and we'll try our best to get a purple tongue picture in! :)
Many prayers & blessings to you!

Waiting for the Sleeping Beauty to wake up, and then we're on it! Her bubba is home today too from school, so we'll just make him get in on the action. ;)
Emailing them in just a bit!
Brent,
Did they use genitin violet? A couple of years ago there was an artice in the paper about polar bears that had an infection. They painted them purple too. We kept the picture cause my girls loved it. My Emily had her tounge painted purple too! She was little when she had it done. She was teething and drooled purple. I wish I had pics to send. Take care Abby! We just ordered T-shirts for the girls. My girls can't wait to get them. They want everyone to pray with us.
God Bless!
The Neipp Family
Just found the pics on Google. Just google purple polar bears! They have the pics right there! Enjoy!
WOW! I'm guessing she got GENTIAN VIOLET STAIN??? LOL - I have 4 kids - and whenever ANY of them got thrush as babies (simply a yeast infection in their mouths) I would forego ANY AND ALL prescribed medicines to treat this - and head to my local food co-op and get a bottle of Good Ol Gentian Violet Stain. The stuff ROCKS!!
Funny story about it - as a first time mom at the age of 22 - my daughter developed thrush - and it was a BUGGER to get rid of. I believe I went through 3 prescriptions of oral diflucan - and 2 of something else- and FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY - one day - my doctor said "Well... there is this other thing you can try - it works really well and is totally natural and organic - BUT... it will look like she's been eating grape popsicles for a day or two. It is only one dose though...
ARE YOU KIDDING ME????????????????
I had her swab my daughters mouth - we went home - and no more thrush!!!!
Medical Doctors are WONDERFUL people!!! BUT... we need to remember at times that what God put on earth for us works VERY well!!!
Lovin her mouth! I have baby pictures of my kids looking much the same and will post them for Abby to see as soon as I find them today! (I have an Abby too!!)
love you alL!
Cathy
I will post a picture later today after I get home from work.. I will be getting my kids to get into it also.. I think I like the purple better than I do a blue one.. But I am sure I will be having a blue tongue.. Keep ur head up Abby.. Things will get better and you wont have the purple tongue anymore.. xoxox
Abby! Your purple tongue is the coolest! I tried to paint my kiddo's tongue, but missed and got his nose instead. He was really mad at me, but he's 2 and not as tough as you. My brother and sister had that when they were younger and we called them the Purple People Eater Pair and made them give us big sloppy kisses with their purple tongues. You hang in there kiddo and don't you worry about the purple tongue - it's one of the neatest things I've seen in a long time!
Abby,
I don't have anything purple at the moment to paint my tongue with because I'm at work, but I wanted to let you know that purple is my FAVORITE color, and it has been since I was a baby!!! I am jealous that you get to have a purple tongue. I hope the medicine works to make your mouth better. As soon as I get off work today I'm going to find me something to make my mouth purple!!
Praying for you,
Laura W. (N. Georgia)
Yep, I know- you photoshopped it! I'm going to get my girls to do purple tongues for Abby today.
If you put a few Spree candies on your tongue next to each other and then rub your tongue up against the roof of your mouth, you can have a multi-colored tongue! Plus, they taste YUMMY!!!!! Maybe Abby could add another color to her tongue via Spree and then have a rainbow!
My son had to do the purple mouth and I had to put it on my breasts because of yeast...
I've been following your blog for awhile now. I always send positive thoughts your way.
My son had Stage 3 Neuroblastoma as a baby. He's one of the few survivors.
I know Abby can get through this.
Take care.
My 5th graders are praying for Abby. They are going to ask their parents for permission tonight to have purple mouths tomorrow. I told them when anyone asks why their mouth is purple, they can tell them about Abby and ask them to pray for her. I will try to take a picture and send it for Abby to see.
Mrs. Weaver and her 5th grade class
praying for you sweetheart!
Gotta be photoshop, right?
Praying for you guys, as always. j

Abby I think your tongue is the most super duper cool tongue EVER! I LOVE it! Saying prayers for you sweet girl!
We have also e-mailed a photo to you Brent of our 2 boys and blogged about it too. Thinking of Abby every day.
Abby, you're the most beautiful little girl I've ever seen! Don't you worry about a purple tongue - pretty soon everyone else will want one, too. Love you, sweetheart and praying hard for you!!
Just out of curiosity was this gentian violet?
Hey Brent,
Gentian violet is some great stuff, isn't it? :)
If, by chance, it doesn't work. I'm not sure how the doctors feel about this, but Grapefruit Seed Extract works wonders on thrush. I believe it comes in both pill and liquid forms. I had thrush while nursing my son and EVERYTHING was tried until I ran across this natural cure and thank God...it worked! I've told many people about it since then and it's worked for everyone that I know. It must be GrapeFRUIT seed extract, not Grape seed extract...big difference. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case it's needed. :)
Good luck!
