Abby Update & Comment Clarification

Tongue-in-Cheek

From Brent:

Folks, the "More Awful Comments" post yesterday was tongue-in-cheek. I know people were calling me names out of FUN!!! I LOVED THE COMMENTS. Believe me, if you knew my family and friends, and how much we enjoy "ribbing" each other, you probably would have called me even more names because you know I can dish it out.

I thought that was pretty clear from what I wrote about it, but perhaps my satirical, dry sense of humor doesn't resonate with everyone. I LOVED THE COMMENTS about the April Fools jokes... if I get called "poop", told "you suck" and "I hate you!" then I know that I really GOTCHA! I can dish it out, and I can take it. Fun "awful" comments are GREAT! Keep'em coming (but get ready for paybacks).

Abby Update From Michelle:

Those of you who follow me on twitter or Facebook know I was very nervous about Abby's oncology appointment Wednesday. The plan was to begin the next round of chemo if her bone marrow and abdomen was healed enough. This is the beginning of the maintenance phase that will last for 2 years. In the Land of Leukemia getting to the maintenance phase is a BIG deal. It is still chemo (two years more of chemo) BUT less harsh. As long as Abby's counts are good, Abby will be able to do fun things... NORMAL things. After 9 months of being stuck at home (when we weren't in the hospital) getting to go places sounds wonderful. For nine months Abby was very fragile and we were more than willing to do what we needed to to do to protect her, but getting to take her out is public will be a wonderful blessing.

The doctor was very pleased with how Abby's abdomen is healing. Two weeks ago surgeons thought she would have to go back to surgery to repair the damage on her tummy after it healed for a few weeks. Now everyone thinks it is healing beautifully and no additional surgery is necessary. It still needs to heal more, but we are praising God for an end to IV antibiotics and the canceled surgery.

In the past, Abby has had a lot of problems with intracranial hypertension (increased pressure in her head from too much spinal fluid). This was a side effect of a chemo that Abby will take for the next two years. The medicine to control them made Abby very nauseated, so much so she was throwing up up to thirty times a day. Abby stopped taking the medicine several months ago, because her body just couldn't handle it.

Even without the medicine to control the pressure, she has had no problems with her spinal pressures for 6 weeks. Major praise. Increased pressure causes monster headaches and left untreated will damage vision and damage her brain. Life without the headaches is very good.

Most of you know it has been very difficult to sedate Abby for her spinal taps (lumbar punctures). Now that her intracranial hypertension is better, they were able to use a different sedation drug. I was with Abby during her spinal tap today. She showed no sign of being able to feel pain or pressure during the procedure. She was very calm during it and appeared to not be aware of what was going on. After the procedure she was happy, smiling and very loving. This was an answer to many of your prayers.

No cancer cells were found in her spinal fluid.

Honestly, I am very excited that Abby has started her last treatment phase. I know I sound insane to be so excited about having "only" two more years of chemo, but I can't help it. After nine very, very tough months, I can finally see the finish line. Yes, it is very far away, but it is there and for today Abby is dancing toward it with a smile on her face.

Please continue to pray:
  • Wisdom to keep Abby safe from diseases and infections, without keeping her out of activities she could enjoy with minimal risk.
  • For her to continue to be cancer free.
  • The intracranial hypertension would not return.
  • The bacteria that was infecting her wound was a pretty nasty bug, so I would appreciate your prayers for continued and complete healing.
  • For Abby to grow up to love God and serve Him.

Thank you so much for praying for Abby and the rest of our family. I would love to pray for you too.

What wonderful news! Who says God doesn't answer prayers? Enjoy being a "normal" family. Of course with you in the mix, probably nobody would accuse your family of being "normal"!

Praise God! I'm so glad to read this news. And I loved seeing Abby's smiling face. I was in and out of hospitals as a child because of a congenital heart defect. Although what I had was nothing like what Abby has gone through I know what it's like to not be able to run and play like the other kids. After my surgery, I made up for lost time. I will pray that Abby will have more good days ahead. And btw, I love your sense of humor Brent. You go ahead and be yourself.

Brent - I wondered if your comment yesterday wouldn't be a problem. While I figured out you were joking about the names you were being callled I figured some wouldn't understand!! I think your funny and there just has to be laughs mixed in with the serious!! Actually can't even believe someone commented negatively about your humor when you have such a sick girl!! So is that supposed to mean that anyone who has a child with a serious illness can't have fun?!?!?! Geez!! Oh well, enough said about that because those kinds of people are just supposed to move along anyway!!

Oh my goodness - the pictures of Abby are adorable. It sure warms my heart to see her smiling without the undercurrent of pain!! Praising God for all the wonderous works he has done with and through Abby!! I will continue to pray for Abby and look forward to all the happy updates I anticipate hearing!! Please continue to post pictures of her (and the rest of the family). It is so nice to see all the smiles and happiness!!

Thanks!

Dear Riggs Family,
After fearing for Abby's life, this milestone is truly fabulous! Is it at all possible she might be able to have hair during maintenance phase? This should be the least of worries, compared to those in the recent past, but I would feel so bad for Abby if she had to wait so long for her beautiful hair to grow back. I know, it may be selfish to pray for not only recovery, but hair, too!

Thank you for posting tonight and allowing us to join in the praise of our KING!

You all deserve a break and hearing that you will soon be able to return to some level of "normal" is pretty darn exciting!

Brent and Michelle - I'm sorry that anyone feels they have the right to lash out at you. I long for the day where no one will desire to sin against another. Come Lord Jesus COME!

Hugs and lots of love - with a HUGE smile!

I so love you guys. I've never posted a comment before, but today I just felt like I should tell you guys that. :) I showed my husband your blog and he was all "we should go meet them!" (We're in Ft Worth). I have a Praying for Abby shirt and got it extra big because I'm pregnant and have an ever-growing tummy for it to fit over. My son loves looking at your photos (he's 5) and we just all, as a family, love you guys. I love your spirit and good attitude about everything and pray that it reaches more and more people - we need more of you in this world! Blessings to you and your sweet family...

PRAISE THE LORD...THANK YOU DEAR GOD!!!! GOD is soooo good. Abby i love that smile you are giving, you have a reason to smile sweetheart, God has plans for you.It is amazing how one little girl has opened some blinded eyes, some just lazy eyes, and got us back on our knees calling out to our Savior. Abby you are loved by so many people, and i am one of them. I know there is still alot to go through, but nothing like you just had. Most of the patients i see on the 2 or 5 year treatment plan, stays tired, but not sick like the "ugly chemo" and i hope you do as good with yours. It will be wonderful for you to get to play and be a little girl, i hope you have a blast everyday doing what you want to. One day i would love to meet you, it would be worth every mile that is between us. I am so happy tonight after reading your message Michelle, no surgery on tummy, and the Dr.s report, hang in there Mommy, our prayers are being answered everyday. Thank you Jesus.

Just checking in to say we're still praying for Abby... and LOVING the picture of her! (You can just SEE her "spunk" in each photo) ☺

As for losing followers.. well, some folks just don't get it. It seems that a few actually believe that Christians aren't supposed to have fun. Can you believe that?? I mean, what MORE can we get excited about than the fact that in CHRIST we can OVER COME ANYTHING?? I personally LOVED the joke! I think it's GREAT that you guys CAN cut-up and enjoy life in the midst of your trials. That's just PROOF of the JOY and inner PEACE that you have in JESUS!

You guys take care and have a GREAT weekend!

I loved the joke...you ARE a bad bad man!!!! I think some people get upset because they don't understand sarcasm...it can be very, very hard to convey sarcasm through the written word, at times I've had to read twice because I thought you were serious. I think also some cultures don't get it. I have a dear Hungarian friend who has NO concept of sarcasm and will look at you straight faced and ask if you are serious. My friend Debra said her Hungarian ex-husband is the same! So I imagine you have people from all over the world, and I noticed some of the complainy comments are often in bad English. So I think you are just misinterpreted a lot of the time!

When our daughter suffered a serious head injury and had hydrocephalus as a result, the doctors in Guatemala used a medication to reduce the pressure. It is something quite antiquated and not normally used anymore in the US, but it does work and has very few side affects. The medication works by causing a change in the osmotic pumps in the CSF system and causing fluid to be pushed out faster than normal. I can get the name of it from our medical records if you are interested. I hope you won't need the info, though!!
