In the Hospital Again

From Michelle:

It was a long day for Abby. We started our morning at the eye doctor doing an ultrasound and some long, complex eye tests. Praise God, the ultrasound looked great and there is no loss of peripheral vision. It was a huge relief to hear her doctor say that her eyes are looking great. Two weeks ago, we were told that Abby's eyes had deteriorated, so much that she needed glasses. Today, they said her eyes were normal. I love that she doesn't need glasses.

We were instructed by Abby's oncologist to take Abby to the ER as soon as the eye exam was done, so that they could do a spinal tap and relieve her pressure. The ER doctor was nervous about doing the procedure in the ER, because Abby's immune system is so compromised. There are just too many germs crawling around down there to be safe. It was exactly what I had been worried about, so I was thrilled that a safer plan was ordered.

Abby's oncologist, decided to admit Abby to the hospital, so they could run tests, do the spinal tap and consult with a neurologist. Abby has had a CT scan to rule out blood clots. I am praying hard that this is one problem that Abby can skip. The girl has been through enough.

Tomorrow morning she will have an LP (spinal tap) so they can measure the pressure and take off the extra fluid. Abby has been in a lot of pain so as weird as it sounds, I am really looking forward to this spinal tap. The procedure stinks, but the pain relief is a huge blessing.

The day from a four year olds perspective:

Abby missed seeing her friends at school. She wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything until 5:30 PM. Weird equipment and procedures... not being allowed to eat... drove her nuts.

Abby is NPO (nothing to eat or drink) again at midnight tonight. I am praying the tests are done quickly in the morning.

Abby's school Christmas party is at 12:30 tomorrow. I hate that she will miss something that is special to her.

Thank you so much for praying for our sweet Abby. We are thankful they are working hard to figure out how to help her.

I continue to pray for Abby, you guys (Brent & Michelle) and her siblings. I look forward to seeing what miracles God will give your little girl once again. It must be so difficult to be her parents and having to make life decisions for her, I pray for wisdom for you and the medical community working with her.

I know when my little ones have to miss something they really want to go to...it's HUGE. I wait with you for the day when Abby doesn't have to miss and is the first one there. Ok, you have more than one blessing...maybe not the first one:). We continue to pray for Abby's healing and will pray that all the tests look good!

Michele and Brent...

I want to take a minute to put in perspective the fact that Abby is in the hospital (and will miss her party)..

Last year, we didn't even think that Abby would be here this Christmas. So, for me, I will praise God that Abby is in the hospital getting whatever tests she needs to get. And I will pray that "next year" Abby will be well enough to go to all the parties her beautiful little heart desires.

(I know that this won't help Abby being upset about missing her class party, but thought it might help you)

love and prayers...

praying. Was wondering if Abby is a Skype addict like my kids. They skype with their grandparents. Was wondering if Abby would like to skype with some of her long-distant friends. I bet one could put together a skype christmas party... just an idea. Liz

Brent & Michelle,

I have been following Abby's story for quite a while. We adopted two children from Guatemala so your story has been close to our heart.

I also wanted to share with you that I have intracranial hypertension. It isn't due to an illness or medication as far as we know, but just started on its own. Medications didn't help, but I can relate to the relief that the lp's give--I longed for them! I've had two shunts place in my brain this last year and it has provided significant relief.

I think about Abby often and pray for her regularly. If I can answer any questions about my experience with IH please don't hesitate to email.

Our prayers are with you.
