Abby Update - Back to the Hospital

From Brent

Sigh...

Here we go again. Abby just left for the hospital for yet another spinal tap. She is taking longer and longer to wake up after these. It's been about 6-8 hours the last couple of times. She should be waking up much quicker than that. Thank you for your prayers for the procedure to go quickly and that she'll wake up sooner.

Garrett is still in the rehab hospital. He'll be there at least another week or more.

...still wearing the same old headache expression.

Abby's pressures will eventually damage her vision. it chokes off the optic nerve, and can - usually WILL - lead to irreversible damage.

i know because i have it. even spinal taps won't permanently relieve it. that's why i have a shunt.

what you may/may not know, is that you can't tap in the same place multiple times. eventually you run out and risk damage to the spine.

maybe because Abby has cancer they don't want to do a shunt, but please at least look into it. Taps can only do so much, and having them so frequently carries many risks. it is becoming clear that whatever is causing Abby's pressures to be high, tapping isn't solving the problem.

once you have a shunt, you NEVER need a spinal tap again. EVER. they can do a "Shunt Tap," where they simply insert a needle through the scalp into the shunt valve. it's like having an IV needle, it's that same equivalent of pain, just feels like an IV. although it would mean major surgery, i just went through the initial surgery last December and had an emergency bran surgery 2 weeks ago, but aside from those surgeries, i NEVER have to worry about my pressures. no meds to take for it, no Taps, no vision damage, no pressure headaches, none of it.

praying for Abby, and that this is an option for her. it isn't without its risks and problems, but as someone going through it myself, i can assure you that it's BEYOND comparison - hands down, much better for day-to-day feeling better.

I know this has to seem impossible to bear, but one thing is clear to me: people can see the work of God in your life through your faithfulness in the midst of trial.
John 9:1 says,As he [Jesus] went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.

God is displaying His work, in and through your lives. Thank you for your faithful witness.

I agree with Michelle above...

My friend Mark couldn't be happier with the results of having shunt & it was only ONE surgery for him!

I feel so bad for Abby!!! *hugs*

Praying it goes well and that there is something else they can do so she doesn't have to keep going through this and neither do you. It hurts to see your own kids in pain. Looking forward to updates and praying god will heal this for her.

Just thinking outloud. There must be a better way that for a four (now five) year old to have so many spinal taps...

and so much chemo...

I can hardly bear to think of such a small child having to endure so much.

Poor little angel.

Bless her precious little heart, she is so beautiful. Praying for God's healing touch ~

@ Michelle, I think they are trying to hold off on major surgery if possible, because Abby's high pressures are caused by the chemo for her cancer - which is not a permanent problem, and one that they don't want to treat with a permanent solution unless it is absolutely necessary. :-)

@ Brent & Michelle, I haven't forgotten about you. I still have some things I'm going to send you (like I promised a month ago) for the kids. Our weather went south shortly after that & I've had some minor health issues, so it hasn't managed to get gathered & mailed yet, but it will soon. And your family is in my prayers as always.

Sweet Abby, I have only just begun reading about your strength and courage against this fight for health but you are thought of often and prayed for here in SC. Hang in there sweetheart!

Brent and Michelle, may 2010 bring you all good health, peace, and blessings galore. May God keep you all wrapped in His grace.

Thinking of you all as you take one day at a time,

Sari
