50 Tiny Specks of Hope

From Michelle:

Thank you for praying for Abby and our family. We are longing for more normal family time and praying for a few absolutely boring days. :-)

Abby's doctors want her ANC (number that represents how her immune system is functioning) to be between 750 and 1200. Too low and infections can be deadly (it's been ZERO the past few days). Too high and her cancer can relapse (her cancer cells mimic white blood cells).

If Abby's blood cells are low for too long they worry that her bone marrow is unable to make healthy cells because it is filled with cancer.

It has been a tough few days for everyone who loves Abby. Thank you so loving her and praying for safety from infection and for her not to relapse.

We are not even close to out of the woods yet BUT her blood work contained a glimmer of hope and we will celebrate it. Her ANC is 50 today which means her blood is showing signs of coming back to life and rebuilding. We may even get to go home today but Abby will be severely quarantined for a few days.

We'll keep you posted.

We are praying for sweet Abby and your entire family. Our Mattie has been so shaken up by what Abby is going through, as well as what your whole family is experiencing. We saw Letters to God (the movie) Sat. night, and we all lost it. We thought of Abby and your family the entire time as well as our sweet Chrissie with her heart surgery. So, so hard to see a child suffer, and so, so hard for a family to experience "normal" with a sick child. God is so good to bless us with the privilege of our sweet children. May He sustain you and give you strength to persevere and rest for the weary. He is our Everlastin God, the Giver of all things good. Chrissie is in open-heart surgery now...a long, long, long surgery today with lots of complications, but our God is mighty to save. He's already given Chrissie 4 years of life that she shouldn't have had, according to science. We are praying for your entire family, and please tell Abby hello and give hugs from all of The Patterson Family.

Hurray for an ANC of 50!!! I've been praying for your precious girl and will keep it up. I hope you have her back home tonight. Did she develop mucocitis (sp?) or has she managed to escaped that? It sounds like torture, I hope she doesn't have it again. Please keep us updated.

Continued prayers for your family, and especially for Abby's protection. Prayers for strength, WBC, relapse and infection protection, pain control, and comfort and strength to her parents. I cannot even imagine this horrible roller coaster you are on. Did Abby end up getting the sores in her mouth and all that? I've been praying she doesn't get that either. My Mom had a kidney transplant in Dec and she also has an extremely LOW WBC right now, so she's going into the hospital for shots to increase her neutrophils.

So, does that mean the marrow test gets delayed? Praying that she does not relapse; I have been watching that countdown clock too hard to see it ratchet back to the beginning, and I agree that would bring some horrendous decisions to make. You know, though, if you were to ask Abby, and I think she should participate to some degree in such a decision, I would bet anything she would agree to start over and start humping that boulder up the hill again...she's that much of a trooper. As a mother, I might struggle with asking her to do that as you have already mentioned, and that is why we will all pray that the number 50 is a sign of progress and not relapse. God bless and just enjoy your hugs with your little angel tonight. She is SUCH a sweetie!

Time for our anti-cancer cheerleading prayer:

"Grow, neutrophils, grow. (clap clap)
Grow, neutrophils, grow. (clap clap)
Grow, neutrophis, grow. (clap clap)
Groowww, neutrophils!!!!"

May God keep cancer down and infection out as Abby's neuts grow just the right amount!
